I am directed by Secretary Sir E. Grey to

acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 30th

ultimo with regard to the proposed University for

Central China.

I am to transmit to you herewith a copy of a

letter from the Lords Commissioners of the Treasury

which was received in reply to an application for the

grant of a portion of the boxer Indemnity for this

object, which was made at the instance of the English

Committee interested in the University scheme.

I am to suggest that Sir F. May should be informed

of the substance of this letter.
